Ukiyo-e (sub. Japanomania)
Ukiyo-e translates into pictures of the floating world. Ukiyo-e was essential for the West’s perception of Japanese art in the late 19th century with corypaeus artists Hokusai and Hiroshige. In the 1870’s Japonism became a trend in Europe and influenced impressionists and post-impressionists including Degas, Monet and Van Gogh.
These prints carry with them a delicate atmosphere, with their limited colour palette, elegant shapes, and ingenious use of negative space, they work wonderfully as standalone pieces or styled with other visually calm prints, like our Simple Ferns and Iconic Plants collections.
