Lake Julsø

€29

Delve into the timeless allure of lakes and their rich history with our thoughtfully restored collection of vintage lake maps, dating back to the 1920s and ‘30s. Each map, meticulously crafted by city planners, captures the aesthetic beauty and historical tapestry of Denmark's natural heritage.

Located near the town of Silkeborg, Julsø is one of the largest lakes in the Northern Jutland region and part of the majestic Gudenå river system.

Known for its picturesque beauty, Julsø was first mentioned in written sources as far back as 1360 and is home to many sagas.

On the lake's northern shore, for instance, one finds Dynæs, a place rich in historical significance. It serves as the backdrop for the ancient Saga of King Lave, whose daughter, Ingrella, fell in love with Thorbjørn, the son of a rival king. Chased by King Lave's enraged men, the ill-fated lovers attempted to escape across the water, only to meet a tragic end as their horse drowned, pulling them beneath the surface.

Printed with Japanese archival ink on a matte Hahnemühle paper in our own studio in rural Copenhagen, Denmark.
